Opening Weekend Lights Up Gnat Country

The first big Friday night of the 2026 high school football season is in the books, and if opening weekend is any indication, we might want to reinforce the rocking chairs on The Front Porch.
Gnat Country gave us blowouts, heavyweight statements, a defending state champion looking very much like a defending state champion, and a couple of games that weren't settled until folks had just about chewed their fingernails down to the knuckle.
As always, Stories Worth Reading isn't about replacing the folks covering these teams. It's about pointing you toward them. These reporters, photographers, broadcasters and sports departments are the people putting in the work. We're just sitting on the porch saying, "Hey, you ought to see this."

🏈 Thomas County Central Makes the Loudest Statement
If there was one score Friday night that made everybody around Georgia sit up a little straighter, this was probably it:
Thomas County Central 57, Colquitt County 21.
These two South Georgia powers hadn't played each other in 14 years. When they finally renewed acquaintances at the Jackets' Nest, Thomas County Central didn't exactly ease back into the relationship.
The Yellow Jackets exploded offensively behind quarterbacks Aidan McPherson and Roland Waldrop, with McPherson scoring on a keeper on Central's opening possession and Waldrop connecting deep with Jabari Watkins as the Jackets began building what became a commanding victory.

🐏 Worth County Still Looks Like the Champ
Anybody wondering whether Worth County planned on easing into its title defense received an answer pretty quickly.
No.
Worth County 49, Brooks County 35.
That's 84 points between two South Georgia programs that don't need much introduction around these parts.
Worth entered 2026 as the defending state champion and opened the season by hanging 49 on Brooks County in Sylvester.

😈 Tift County Opens With a 41-0 Shutout
There's winning your opener.
And then there's 41-0.
Tift County started its season by shutting out Luella at Brodie Field. MaxPreps confirms the Blue Devils moved to 1-0 with the 41-point victory.

🐱 Valdosta Starts the Road to 1,000 With a Bang
Valdosta's march toward one of high school football's most remarkable milestones began with:
Valdosta 52, Jones County 14.
The Wildcats scored 28 points in the first quarter and led 38-14 by halftime before adding two more touchdowns in the third.
That's not easing into a season. That's kicking the front door open.

🐊 Ware and Bainbridge Give Us a One-Point Thriller
Here's one that deserves attention:
Ware County 22, Bainbridge 21.
Bainbridge began the Jamey DuBose era against a quality Ware County program and came within a single point of starting it with a victory. MaxPreps has the final and additional team coverage available free.

🌪 Fitzgerald Gets It Done in Homerville
Another traditional South Georgia matchup had Fitzgerald traveling to Clinch County.
The Purple Hurricane came home with a 22-13 victory.

⚔️ Lowndes Handles Jenkins
Lowndes opened its season at Martin Stadium with a 31-6 victory over Jenkins.

Between Lowndes and Valdosta combining for 83 points on opening night, football season around Titletown appears to be functioning normally.
🏹 Irwin County Starts 1-0
Irwin County got its season underway with a convincing 35-11 victory over Wilcox County.
One of the best completely free resources for following teams throughout Gnat Country continues to be Georgia Public Broadcasting. GPB's Irwin County page already has the result posted along with the Indians' upcoming schedule.

Irwin hosts Bacon County next Friday before traveling to Fitzgerald on September 4.
🌾 Schley County Wins a Shootout in Ashburn
Don't overlook this one.
Schley County 41, Turner County 26.
Turner actually produced 351 yards of offense, according to the statistics currently posted by MaxPreps, but Schley came away with the 15-point victory.

These smaller-school games are exactly why we're casting the Gnat Country net wide. There's good football being played well beyond the biggest stadiums.
🐶 Macon County Blanks Dooly
Macon County had itself an opening night.
Macon County 36, Dooly County 0.
MaxPreps currently credits Macon County with 437 total yards, including 218 rushing and 219 passing.
That's about as balanced as a coach could draw it up.

🌊 Don't Forget the Coast
Gnat Country doesn't stop at I-75.
Over toward the coast, Richmond Hill and Effingham County provided one of Friday night's best finishes.
