The waiting is over.
Friday night lights are coming back on across Gnat Country, from the Chattahoochee to the Atlantic and everywhere south of that Columbus-Macon-Augusta line.
And what an opening weekend we've got.
State championship contenders. Old rivals. Small-town showdowns. Private-school powers. And one heavyweight collision in Thomasville that earns our first Gnat Country Game of the Week designation.
🏆 GNAT COUNTRY GAME OF THE WEEK
1. Colquitt County at Thomas County Central
Friday, 7:30 p.m. — The Jackets' Nest, Thomasville
You could make a good case for three different games this week, but we're going with the big one.
Colquitt County. Thomas County Central.
Two of the biggest names in South Georgia football meet right out of the gate.
Thomas County Central begins its title defense at home, while Colquitt County makes the trip from Moultrie looking to immediately establish itself as one of Georgia's elite teams in 2026.
TCC doesn't need much introduction after its championship run. The Yellow Jackets have built themselves into one of Georgia's premier programs.
Neither does Colquitt County. The Packers have been playing championship-caliber football for generations, and Mack Tharpe Stadium has produced enough big games to fill a book.
But this one isn't in Moultrie.
It's at The Jackets' Nest.
That home-field atmosphere combined with the talent on both sidelines makes this our choice for the inaugural Gnat Country Game of the Week.
What we're watching: Can Colquitt handle TCC's speed and physicality on the road, and how quickly do the Yellow Jackets look like the defending champions?
⚔️ 2. Thomasville at Cairo
THE BORDER WAR
Friday, 7:30 p.m. — West Thomas Stadium, Cairo
If we were choosing purely on rivalry, this might be No. 1.
Thomasville and Cairo are separated by roughly 15 miles, and they have been playing football against one another for generations.
This is a Border War in every sense.
Records don't matter much. Classification doesn't matter much. And what happened last year won't mean much once these two start hitting each other Friday night.
Thomasville won 45-23 last season and also won a 35-28 thriller in Cairo in 2024. But Cairo won 24-3 in 2023. Recent history has gone back and forth, just like a good rivalry should.
The Bulldogs enter 2026 ranked among Georgia's better Class AA teams, while Cairo remains one of South Georgia's proudest football programs.
What we're watching: Emotion. Turnovers. Penalties. And which team keeps its head when West Thomas Stadium gets loud.
This is precisely the kind of rivalry that deserves the name:
🦟 GNAT COUNTRY BORDER WAR
🐏 3. Brooks County at Worth County
Friday, 7:30 p.m. — Sylvester
Don't let the classifications fool you.
This is a heavyweight fight.
Worth County enters 2026 as a defending state champion, and Brooks County certainly didn't go looking for an easy opener.
Last season, Worth went into Quitman and beat Brooks County 44-25. One year earlier, Brooks beat Worth 26-7.
Now they settle Round Three in Sylvester.
Brooks County has built its reputation on playing anybody, anywhere. Worth County has developed into one of the state's premier smaller-school programs.
What we're watching: Worth gets everybody's best shot now that it has a championship target on its back. Brooks would love nothing better than to ruin the Rams' opening-night celebration.
Don't be surprised if this winds up being the best game of the night.
4. Fitzgerald at Clinch County
Friday, 7:30 p.m. — Homerville
You want South Georgia football?
Here you go.
Fitzgerald. Clinch County.
Two towns where football isn't simply something to do on Friday night.
It's part of the culture.
Both programs have state championship banners, playoff pedigrees and generations of people who understand exactly what this matchup means.
Fitzgerald brings the Purple Hurricane down Highway 441 to face the Panthers in Homerville.
There won't be anything fancy about the atmosphere.
Just two proud programs trying to establish themselves on opening night.
What we're watching: Which team controls the line of scrimmage. This feels like the sort of game where the fourth quarter belongs to whoever can still run the football.
5. Ware County at Bainbridge
Friday, 7:30 p.m. — Bainbridge
Here's another matchup between two programs accustomed to playing meaningful football in November.
Ware County makes the long trip west from Waycross to face Bainbridge.
The Gators have established themselves as one of the state's consistently strong programs, while Bainbridge has its own championship tradition and one of the better home-field environments in Southwest Georgia.
This is an excellent opening-night measuring stick for both.
What we're watching: How Ware handles the road trip and whether Bainbridge can turn this into a physical, four-quarter football game.
6. Luella at Tift County
Friday, 7:30 p.m. — Brodie Field, Tifton
There's something different about opening night at Brodie Field.
The Blue Devils begin the 2026 season at home against Luella in what should give us our first real indication of what this year's Tift County team can become.
The schools haven't met recently. Their last two meetings came in 2014 and 2015, with Tift winning both decisively.
That history won't help anybody Friday.
This is a new season and a new opportunity for Tift County.
What we're watching: Does Tift come out sharp and establish control early, or does Luella turn this into the kind of uncomfortable opening-night game that hangs around into the second half?
7. John Milledge Academy at Tiftarea Academy
Friday, 7:30 p.m. — Chula
And yes — the private schools count in Gnat Country.
John Milledge comes south to face Tiftarea in one of the most interesting private-school games of the weekend.
Tiftarea is part of what should be a fascinating South Georgia GIAA race this season alongside programs such as Deerfield-Windsor and Terrell Academy.
This also gives Tift County football fans two games practically in the backyard Friday night — Luella at Tift County and John Milledge at Tiftarea.
What we're watching: This is our first opportunity to see where Tiftarea fits in what could become a very competitive South Georgia private-school season.
👀 JUST OUTSIDE THE TOP 7
Jenkins at Lowndes deserves serious consideration. Anytime Lowndes opens a season at Martin Stadium, we pay attention.
So do Crisp County at Early County, Wilcox County at Irwin County, Vidalia at Jeff Davis, Metter at ECI, Statesboro at Southeast Bulloch, and Valwood at Cottonwood, Alabama.
There are a bunch of good football games in Gnat Country this week.

Opening weekend doesn't get much better than this.
We've got the defending champion Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets hosting Colquitt County.
We've got Thomasville and Cairo renewing a genuine Border War.
We've got defending champion Worth County welcoming Brooks County to Sylvester.
We've got Fitzgerald-Clinch, Ware-Bainbridge and Tift County opening at Brodie Field.
And we've got private-school football from Chula to Albany to Dawson and beyond.
That's exactly what Gnat Country Sports is supposed to be about.
Not just the biggest schools.
Not just one classification.
Not just the teams that get Atlanta's attention.
